Mayo High School hosts ribbon cutting for conference center, renovated gym
Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology hosted a ribbon-cutting for a new conference center and renovated gymnasium on Oct. 6.

Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology formally opened the doors to its new conference center and renovated gymnasium recently during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Surrounded by school administration, students, elected officials and project advisors, Dr. Thelma Dawson, member of the Darlington Board of Education, and Arlene Wallace, principal of Mayo High School, snipped the ribbon to much applause.

Jamie Morphis, chairman of the Darlington County Board of Education, spoke briefly to those gathered for the event. “We just want to congratulate Mayo High School. This has been long-awaited and much deserved,” Morphis said. “It is great to have a facility like this, and we really want to thank the community, the taxpayers and so forth, for having the confidence in the Board to see this project through.”

Also attending the event were Connell Delaine and Charles Govan, members of the Darlington County Board of Education; Dr. Bill Boyd, Darlington County School District (DCSD) acting superintendent; Gloria Hines, mayor of Darlington; Ashley Smith, DCSD chief financial officer; Robert Goodson, project architect; Thurmond Porter, project manager; Derek Wilson, project engineer; Stevette Young, Mayo High School Academic Booster Club president; and several Mayo High School teachers and students.

Following the ribbon-cutting, Wallace led members of the news media and local officials on a tour of the facility and the gymnasium. The school and district will be able to use conference center to host gatherings and events rather than renting spaces elsewhere. The conference center is also available for booking by the general public.
