Foxes state bound

By Coach Jimmy

White In a battle of 12-1 Berkeley and 12-1 Hartsville many people predicted a Berkeley victory. On paper it is understandable whey many felt that way. The Stags had a 2,000 yard passer, a 1,900 yard rusher and a 1,000 yard receiver. But when the dust settled the Red Foxes had a convincing victory that would put them in Columbia Saturday night playing for a state championship.

With the 37-20 win the Foxes dominated over a talented team from the Lowcountry. The Foxes took the opening kickoff and on the fourth play Tiyon Evans provided a preview of what was to come. Evans took the handoff and ran 42 yards for a TD. The PAT was blocked, but he Foxes led 6-0.

After an exchange of punts Berkeley got on the board with a 31 yard TD pass from Eric Tuttle to D.J. Chisolm. The PAT was good and the Stags took a 7-6 lead. In the second quarter the Foxes retook the lead with a 42 yard TD pass from A.J. Joyner to Dashawn Davis. Caleb Caldwell added the extra point and the Foxes led 13-7.

Bad field position hurt the Red Fox offense, but the defense would not allow the Stags to take advantage despite running 14 plays in Red Fox territory. Near the end of the half the Foxes mounted a drive that ended with a Caleb Caldwell field goal from 30 yards out. This gave the Foxes a 16-7 halftime lead. The third quarter saw the Stags mount a good drive that ended with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Tuttle to Dervon Pesnell.

The successful extra point pulled the Stags to within 16-14 with 7:53 left in the third quarter. Hartsville immediately answered with Evans scoring on a 79 yard run. The PAT made the score 23-14 in favor of the Foxes. When the Red Fox defense stopped Berkeley on 4th and 1 on Hartsville’s 33 yard line Hartsville had all the momentum.

After driving to the Stags’ three yard line Evans scored his third TD on the night and the Foxes led 30-14. Berkeley tried to get back in the game with a good drive that ended with a second TD pass from Tuttle to Pesnell.

The 2 point conversion attempt failed and the Foxes led 30-20 with just under 10 minutes to play. Any hope the Stage may have had ended when Evans scored on an 83 yard run. The PAT made the score 37-20 and all that remained was to run out the clock. The Bizzell’s Offensive Player of the Game was Tiyon Evans who ran for 307 yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns.

The Bizzell’s Defensive Player of the Game was Demonte Capehart who had three sacks and four tackles for loss. Hartsville now moves on to play South Pointe for the state championship Saturday at 6:30 in Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Go out next week and support the Foxes.
